Plastic Free Packaging - our Commitment to Sustainability
Updated for 2019.
We're working hard on phasing out plastic throughout our product line up, so far we have achieved the following:
- Partnered with 3 large (IR500) retailers on removing plastics from their packaging
- Redesigned our glues to reduce synthetic content and increase bio-based materials
- Phasing out the red tear strip across all corrugated packaging
- Introduced a kraft paper tape that uses an organic rubber that's ideal for high output fulfilment
- Introduced post-consumer recycled fiber material into our envelope ranges
- Reduced plastic usage within our own warehouse operations
- Internally develop our Corporate Social Responsibility policy
- Review our own company ethics, define a long term strategy for plastic reduction
- Invested in partnerships with Plastic Free governing bodies and charities (press release on this coming soon).
There's more happening behind the scenes too, just take a look at our case studies and you'll see that we're working with a number of forward thinking eCommerce brands on helping them rid plastics from their eCommerce operations.
Plastic is insidious, it's literally everywhere, so it's going to take us longer than we initially anticipated to phase it out, but we are 100% committed to doing so. We're collaborating with our suppliers and investing significant energy into reducing our carbon footprint, reducing waste throughout our production facilities and ensuring that we practice what we preach.
To learn more about the damage plastic pollution is inflicting on our environment, be sure to watch our sponsored video of Liz Bonnin, talking at the Eco Packaging Summit in July 2019.
Friday the 8th of June 2019 was #WorldOceansday, which is perfect timing for our announcement as this really drives home the need for some serious change in the packaging industry. Our vision is to be the world's most ethical eCommerce packaging provider, in the hope that others will follow suit.
By the end of 2018 we will have removed all plastic packaging from our stock product line up. This includes removing all mailbags, bubble mailers, plastic ecommerce tape and reformulating inks and glues to be more eco-friendly and sustainable going forwards. We want our brand Lil Packaging to become synonymous with plastic free packaging.
As a packaging company that makes products with a short lifespan, we realise just how important it is that we do our bit to protect our environment.
As most of you may already know, all of our cardboard is either FSC® / PEFC® certified and 100% recyclable, but we're focused on making that extra commitment. We are developing an exciting new range of eco-friendly Plastic Free Packaging that makes clever use biodegradable and recyclable materials as well as vegetable based, up-cycled and recycled inks.
We'll also be advising all of our existing customers on ways in which they can make the switch to ethical eCommerce packaging that's both as scalable and efficient as it is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
UPDATE: In line with our commitment to sustainability, we've upgraded the material on our Lil envelopes, (our eco friendly alternative to the bubble mailer). They're now made from 100% recycled post-consumer waste paper board and printed exclusively with upcycled eco-friendly soy based inks (all with no compromise on strength). The UK's biggest online retailer ships out their goods using this exact mailer, so this represents a huge step towards eliminating unsustainable packaging from eCommerce.
It's our hope that our commitment to eradicating plastics from eCommerce packaging will be the catalyst for much bigger industry-wide change.
Here's to a much brighter and more sustainable future.
